The site of the Art Institute of Chicago marks an invisible boundary between the north & south side of the city making Chicago the city of two tales. Differences in approach from both sides is noticeable. The long history of racial injustice in the city & the disinvesment in marginalized communities goes back to the time of establishing the Art Institute of Chicago as part of beautifying the city for the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893. The annex proposed here challenges the notion of art as a private entity. It opens up the Museum to its southside throughout a meander(ramp) that exposes the art to the public encouraging civic engagement while respecting the historic integrity of the building.
